A winter wonderland can quickly turn into the nightmare before Christmas if you're not careful when decorating for the holidays.

"We'll have one or two runs per season that might be related in some way. Its typically wiring problems, someone has put a cord under a door, something of that nature and friction from opening and closing the door has worn the wire something of that nature is typically what we see." Says Keith Mefford

Keith Mefford, the Assistant Fire Chief of the Bowling Green Fire Department has some tips for you to remember before decorating inside and out. Mefford says when hanging lights outside you want to be sure you have the proper wiring.

"You wanna make sure your cords are in good shape, no frayed wires, no bare spots. Look at your extension cords as well, make sure they're in good condition."

It's also import to only use outdoor lights outside. When buying and decorating that perfect tree Mefford says...

"If you are getting a fresh cut tree, you want to be sure the tree is farely fresh. A good way to do that is to just rake your hands down the pine needles and make sure the pine needles don't come off."

He says it's also important to put your lights on a timer or turn them off completely when leaving.

"Anytime you're going to be, not in the house you want to be sure you turn all the lights off. And at night, you want to put it on a timer so that it will go off."

Mefford also says it's important to not overload your electrical outlets with lights. He says you should use an electrical strip with a built in circuit breaker. If you have a live tree, it's important to keep it watered so it doesn't dry out as quickly.
