An Eastern Kentucky coal mine where five miners were killed last spring has been sealed and abandoned.
Kentucky Darby Mine, #1 in Harlan County, Ky., never resumed operations after the fatal May 20 blast. Federal officials are still investigating that explosion. Penalties will be decided after their report is complete, but records do show the company owes $5,100 for 41 violations not related to the accident.
The mine was sealed about three weeks ago, which has some mine safety advocates concerned the fines may never be collected. Officials said that will not occur.
