What Schools are Failing?

The No Child Left Behind Act is supposed to point out failing schools and give parents the chance to transfer their kids to schools not listed as failing.

Some Kentucky school officials say the report was released prematurely. L.C. Curry Elementary is on the list, but Bowling Green Superintendent Dr. John Settle claims the assessment process the Bush Administration used to measure each state isn't fair to Kentucky.

Kentucky appealed in order to use existing assessment measures. The appeal calls for federal government to use school scores from this September, not from 1999-2000.

So far, the Bush Administration has not formally rejected or accepted the appeal. Other schools on the list in south central Kentucky include: Sparksville, Summersville, Bonnieville, and Gamaliel, Tompkinsville, and Lake Malone Elementaries.

The list also included Oakland Elementary, but Assistant Superintendent of Warren County Schools Tim Murley says he's talked with the State Department of Education and that Oakland's scores do not reflect a failing status.
