Criminals have now found a clever way to rob you of your gift card balances before you have the chance to spend the balance you activated on the card. There are various ways that crooks can go about achieving the balance of your gift card.

Here are tips to avoiding gift card scams.

1. Purchase gift cards only from reputable sources, such as directly from the store.

2. Never buy gift cards from auctions on the Internet.
Many times these are counterfeit.

3.Keep your receipt as a proof of purchase as long as you still have a balance on the card.

4. Immediately after buying a gift card ask the clerk to scan the card to verify the card is valid and has the proper value activated on it.

The local Target in Bowling Green has also seen another crime this Christmas season that is being associated with gift card scams.

"We've actually seen where guest credit cards have been stolen and they have actually come in the building and purchase large amounts on gift cards and what we have actually been able to do is void those transactions out and able to get that money back out to the guest that their credit card has been stolen," said Kyle Bunch, guest experience leader at Target.

Target is also taking measures to prevent people from purchasing gift cards with stolen credit cards.

"With gift card purchases amounts of over $500 and access they have to get managers approval," Bunch said.

By doing this, they hope to cut back on the number of crooks this Christmas holiday.
