Chamber Parking Spots Take Center Stage

The City Commission met for one of the last times as the Commission elected back in 2004.

Mayor Elaine Walker was out-of town at a conference so Mayor Pro Tem and Commissioner Slim Nash controlled the gavel.

The Commission voted unanimously to contract Scott & Murphy Construction to expand Fairview Cemetery. The expansion is expected to add more than 4,005 plots to the cemetery, which would add an additional 11 to 12 years of life to it.

The only real discussion came over a Municipal Order that called for an amendment to the Downtown Redevelopment's agreement for additional parking for the new Chamber of Commerce building.

The original plan was to have 40 mid-block parking spaces built, but after surveying the property, the DRA asked the city to instead tear down the Kirtley Building to make room for new parking.

"The city currently owns the Kirtley Building and is receiving $500 a month in rent from a business. So you're then causing another business owner to move out of downtown by tearing down a building," Commissioner Brian Strow said.

The idea faced opposition from both Strow and Commissioner Mark Alcott.

The Commission voted 3 to 1 to table the discussion until its Dec. 19, 2006, meeting.
