An Adair County School is Helping a Family in Need

The Adair County High Beta Club and the ACHS faculty and staff are kicking off The Smith Christmas Challenge.

Christmas is less than two weeks away and an area community is rallying around a family with a sick child. When 5-year-old Walker Smith was 2-years-old he had to have a double-lung transplant.

Walker has been relatively healthy for the last few years, however he recently developed a fungal infection in his transplanted lungs. Now the Adair County High Beta Club, in Ky., is raising money for the family.

"It started out as us just collecting money, but it blossomed into something so much bigger," said Samantha Hall, the Beta Club secretary.

The drive started small with just the Beta Club collecting money. However as the fund raising began it grew into a community wide effort.

"To see such a small community chip in ... it's just amazing for such a small town," said Katie Lavictoire, president of the Beta Club.

As the fund raising continues, the donations continue to add up. According to the teachers, the average daily donation is around $1,000 to $1,500.

"We hope that this is going to be one of the best Christmas that they could have had, especially with all the bills piling up," Lavictoire said.

Besides helping the Smith family, the teachers say this is a real-life educational experience for the students.

So far the community has raised more than $9,000 for the Smith family.
