We all love watching those huge fireworks shows, but putting them together is another story.

It takes a lot of money, time, and precision.

WBKO found out how its done from Orchestra Kentucky, on the eve of their "Star-Spangled Spectacular" concert and fireworks show.

Music and fireworks.

But to get to this, it has to start here.

"It will consist of 750 shells. The first 17 minutes there will be a shell in the air every 3 seconds. So the sky will never be dark. And then the last 3 minutes, the grand finale we'll have about 30 shells in that 3-minute period," says Jeffery Reed, Music Director "Orchestra Kentucky".

In order to make sure everything goes off without a hitch, the orchestra works with "Rhino Displays"... a fireworks company out of Illinois.

"They come, set up. It takes a couple of days to set up actually, and they coordinate the fireworks with the music we'll be playing," says Reed.

A task like this doesn't run cheap.

The 20-minute show costs around $12,500.

"So I believe that works out to 650 dollars a minute."

Then you also have to factor in safety concerns to keep the crowds out of harms way during the show.

"They want to make sure that where they fire the fireworks from is a certain distance from any crowds. There's not any access from the public to the display area and there's always fire trucks available in case we do have a problem," says Reed.

"The crowd's always excited to see fireworks."

If you'd like to see the fireworks, just head out to the "Star-Spangled Spectacular" at WKU's Guthrie Bell Tower on campus... emcee'd by our own Gene Birk.

Grounds open at 6pm with the concert starting at 8 pm.

Fireworks begin at 9:15pm.
