Preliminary statistics indicate that nine died in seven separate crashes on Kentucky’s roadways during the New Year’s holiday period.
Alcohol is suspected in one of the seven crashes and seven of the nine victims were not wearing seatbelts.
The accidents occurred in Breathitt, Woodford, Jefferson, Laurel, Pulaski and Spencer Counties.
Preliminary statistics also indicate that a total of 907 people lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2006. Four-hundred and ninety-four victims were not wearing seatbelts.
As of Jan. 1, a primary seatbelt law passed by the General Assembly went into effect. It gives law enforcement officers the right to pull you over and issue you a ticket if you are found not wearing a seatbelt.
