There's a new sheriff in Barren County. Chris Eaton took over the role from retiring Sheriff Barney Jones on Monday, Jan. 1, 2007.
Becoming the Barren County sheriff is fulfilling a dream Chris Eaton has had since he was five-years-old and he hit the ground running right when his office became official.
"At exactly midnight I was out answering calls till about four in the morning. Monday I stayed out and answered calls," Eaton said.
Sheriff Eaton, an eight-year veteran of the department, said he ran on the campaign promise of availability, dependability and accessibility. He said he wants to be a visible presence in the community.
"I'm going to be out at night and I'm going to be patrolling," Eaton said.
The new sheriff has already installed a crime tipline that the citizens of Barren County call anonymously.
"You know if it weren't for people calling in a lot of times and letting us know, we couldn't get some of the stuff solved as it is," Eaton said.
He's also started an ATV identification service that's free to the citizens of Barren County.
"What we'll do is if you call us out we'll come out and photograph your four-wheeler, we'll write down the registration number, the vin number and we'll come back and log it into the computer here," Eaton said.
Then if it's ever stolen, the department already has the information and can enter it into a national database.
"I think you get a little bang for your buck. You pay taxes and I feel like it's a service we should offer to you," Eaton said.
As his new role begins, Sheriff Eaton said he's not going to forget the people who helped his dream come true.
He said he'll listen to all of the suggestions and tips the residents of Barren County have and his door is always open.
