First Muslim in Congress

Nancy Pelosi wasn’t the only person to make history on Capitol Hill today, Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007. The U.S. House of Representative seated its first Muslim member this morning.

Instead of being sworn in with the Bible, Keith Ellison used a Koran which was once owned by Thomas Jefferson.

Ellison’s choice of religious book upset some of his fellow politicians. Ellison has said that his religious affiliation will not drive his politics and that he’s a politician that just happens to be Muslim.

In addition to being the first Muslim on Capitol Hill, Ellison is also the first black congressman from Minnesota.
