The first mining accident of the year in Kentucky injures a Leslie County man.
Fourty-three-year-old Samuel H. Melton, of Wooten was installing a ventilation curtain, when a piece of draw rock fell from between roof bolts, striking him in the head.
The accident happened at about 9:55 a.m. ET, Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, in the Blue Diamond Coal Company Number 74 Mine in Perry County.
Melton was airlifted to Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport, Tennessee.
The Kentucky Office Of Mine Safety And Licensing calls this a "serious" accident and has closed the mine to investigate.
Eighteen miners died in Kentucky coal mines in 2006, the worst death toll since 1993.
