Warren County Homeowners Get New Hearing

Some Warren County homeowners are going to fiscal court trying to stop a new development. They want to keep the Middle Bridge and Roy Thomas Road area just the way it is.

Brent Travelsted represents some of the homeowners in the Middle Bridge - Roy Thomas Road area. In November 2006, the planning and zoning commission approved rezoning Middle Bridge, Roy Thomas Road area from agricultural to residential estate, but Travelsted asked for and was granted a completely new full hearing on the rezoning of that area by a unanimous vote of the fiscal court.

Keith Carwell represented the owner and developers of the property, Calvin Alford and Middle Bridge Properties. They want to subdivide 97 acres into 65 one-acre lots, and were granted permission by the planning and zoning commission.

According to the homeowners the area is too densely populated, and would cause traffic, groundwater and quality of life problems. They also say the planning and zoning commission meeting was tainted.

"One of the things that we came here today concerned with, is the fact that the Nov. 16, 2006, hearing before the zoning commission was somewhat tainted, because of business relationships between the applicants, the people who want the subdivision and some members of the zoning commission," Travelsted said. "So I was very pleased the fiscal court voted today, to give us a full and fair hearing."

That hearing is set for 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007, in the second floor courtroom of the old Warren County Courthouse.
Travelsted said as a compromise the homeowners suggested the developers build three-acre lots, but that hasn't happened. Carwell was filling in for Whayne Priest who was out of town, and Carwell did not feel comfortable speaking on his clients' behalf.
