Adventures in Kentucky: Big South Fork, Part Three

In last week’s Adventures in Kentucky we left Brandon, after repelling off of a 90 foot cliff and wading across the Cumberland River. In the third and final part of the Big South Fork adventures, we catch up with Brandon and learn a little bit about cooking in the woods.

As reported by Brandon:

Already at Big South Fork we have repelled off of a cliff and crossed a river. Now, we are more than ready to get into dry clothes, start a fire and get something to eat.

After the fire is ready, we use a flat rock to serve as our stove top. The handle of the pot was way too warm to hold, so we improvised and used a clean sock as an oven mitt.

Most people cringe with the mention of camp food but all of the food on our trip was surprisingly good. After a little waiting and a little stirring, the food is ready and we cannot wait to eat.

We’ve gotten our pot off the fire. We took it off the hot rock we had in here and we let it cool down a little bit. We’ve got some freeze dried food that we added to the boiled water. Nat’s hooked us up with some great food.

We ate until we were full and then settled in for our last night at the park at Big South Fork. We woke early the next morning and began to break down our camp. The clothes we hung along the rope had dried.

We doused the fire and made sure that everything we brought in made its way out. With any trip outdoors, it is very important to leave no trace. That ensures the same beautiful scenery that you were able to enjoy.

Though we made no mark on the park, Big South Fork certainly left a mark on us.
