For the past year, Chris Eaton, the Barren County Sheriff, has been talking to the Barren County School District about the possibility of adding a school resource officer to the high school.
"I want the children that go to school there to reflect not only to the sheriff's department, but all law enforcement in a positive manner," said Eaton.
Sheriff Eaton posted a deputy at the school as a pilot project to see if it would work.
He then went to the Barren County Fiscal Court meeting last to see about making the position permanent.
Sheriff Eaton says he hopes the issue will come up for a vote at the next meeting.
Deputy Mike Gibbons has been serving as the school's resource officer since the beginning of January 2007.
Deputy Gibbons says he wants to help keep the students safe, while developing a relationship with them at the same time.
"I think it's good to let the students know we're here to help them, not get them in trouble or anything like that," said Deputy Gibbons.
