High Bonds An Issue?

"I've been told on two separate occasions that the jail will not accept 10,000 dollars of cash or more at their office," attorney Alan Simpson said.

Which Bowling Green criminal defense attorney Alan Simpson and area other attorneys say has affected their ability to quickly post bonds for clients.

"When that happens, you're either going to have to get the judge to change the bond to $9,999.99 or change it to some other form of bond," continues Simpson.

Warren County Jailer Jackie Strode says that the jail takes bond as a courtesy, not a requirement.

The past two years the jail has not taken bond money totaling more than $10,000.

He says that dealing with that much money at once could negatively affect the way the jail is run.

"We'd have to totally shut down booking down when we start to count this cash. This occupies 2 deputies time," says Strode.

Warren County Circuit Court Clerk Pat Goad says special circumstances make it the right decision for the County Clerk to accept bonds over $10,000.

"Any time a bond for 10,000 dollars or more is made. If it has anything to do with any drug charges or money laundering an IRS paper has to be filled out, which is a little more drawn out, a little more time consuming," says Goad.

Another concern Simpson says he has is the availability of bondsmen after hours.

Warren County currently doesn't have an on-call person to receive bonds after hours and on weekends.

Barren County is in the same situation as Warren.

They don't have an on-call bonds person and they will only accept $9,999.99 at the jail.

However, Logan, Allen, Grayson, and Simpson Counties all accept bonds of $10,000 or higher.

They also accept bonds 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Goad says she can only recall one incident in Warren County where a bond needed to be paid after hours.
