Lack of alcohol sales in Barren County could be affecting the area's economic growth.

Ernie Myers from the Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce said a wet/dry vote has failed at least three times within the past 15 years.

He said the Chamber hasn't taken a stand on whether or not they believe Barren County or Glasgow should sell alcohol but they are gathering data to correctly inform voters on how a wet/dry vote could affect their community.

"We hope that in putting out the correct amount of information and to be able to put out accurate information, the choice of the voter won't be and emotional choice but a choice predicated by fact," Myers said.

Myers also said there is no reason to believe that a wet/dry vote could be on the ballot any time soon but since Cave City recently voted to legalize the sell of alcohol, the Chamber believes anything could happen.

"We want to prepare with the information to disseminate because we know sometime it's going to be," Myers said.

The Chamber is going to prepare by visiting other cities that were once dry but now sell alcohol. Some of these cities include Elizabethtown, Murray and Danville.

"We are going to visit a few of out peer cities to see what the outcome has been and what the results and the affect has been to the city as far as economic growth, more restaurants, more retail, more of an industrial climate," Myers said.

Myers also said this would not only be good for Barren County residents, it could also help with tourism, bringing people into Glasgow, and increasing revenue.

"We would gain some national brand restaurants, it would give more choices. It would also make us more of a center for commercial developments," Myers added.

Myers said about half of Barren County and Glasgow residents are for a wet county and the other half are against it.
