T.J. Samson Strives for Comfort

A local hospital is adding a warm, home-like feel to its facilities.

T.J. Samson Community Hospital opened the renovated wing about two weeks ago. The wing holds about ten to 15 patients.

The chief of patient centered services said the entire hospital is focused on patient center care and this renovation is the first major step towards that goal.

“It’s so peaceful, just like you’re in a serene place. I think that’s good for you when you’re sick and you need the help,” patient, Charles Frazee said.

Frazee has been a patient at T.J. Samson for two weeks. He was being treated in a regular hospital room but is now in the newly renovated wing.

He said the care T.J. Samson gives is great, anywhere in the hospital but there’s something personable about where he’s staying now.

“This is more homey here. The colors on the walls, the boarders, the pictures on the wall, the clock and the floor. You don’t feel like your in a hospital,” Frazee said.

Registered nurse, Rebecca Montgomery said this is because the hospital softened the lighting, added calming music, hardwood floors, soothing colors and eliminated the ‘clinical feel’ most hospitals have.

“It creates that calm. It creates peace. I believe that you know that music is calming to most people. When they’re in this setting, that’s what we want to bring forward,” Rebecca said.

Rebecca also noted that as soon as you walk into the wing, your stress level will drop. She said this is therapy for the patients and can help speed up the healing process.

The environment is family and friends oriented and the hospital encourages loved ones to stay while the patient is being treated.

“The opportunity to actually stay with the patient when they’re sick, stay with a family member, means a lot,” Rebecca said.

Charles said his friends feel very relaxed when they visit and enjoy the atmosphere in this new wing.

“It’s good for the staff. It’s good for the families. It’s an overall wonderful environment,” Rebecca said.

Employees of T.J. Samson decorated the new wing and hospital officials say it will take about five years for the entire hospital to be renovated and adopt this new idea.

The concept behind this calming environment comes from a company called Planetree. If you would like to know more about Planetree, log onto their website at www.planetree.org.
