Deadman's Curve Gets a Face Lift

A windy stretch of U.S. 431 in Muhlenberg County, known as “Deadman’s Curve,” is getting straightened.

The site has had more than 20 crashes, including several fatalities between October of 1999 and December of 2003.

In March 2004, crews cut down a hill to extend visibility. They also widened the shoulders on the curve. Now the curve will be straightened and those with the Transportation Department hope it will be safer.

“This is one of the places where we can say ‘yes’ the alignment of this road has had something to do with causing a number of crashes at this site and now we’re going to be straightening the curve,” said Keith Todd with the Kentucky Transportation Department.

The Kentucky Transportation Department said since the work began on the curve in 2004, there have only been three crashes with no fatalities.

Weather-permitting, the work on the curve is expected to be finished by mid-summer.
