The Opportunity Center

A center that provides job skills to physically and mentally challenged adults in Muhlenberg and Hopkins counties is getting a second chance.

Jonie Morris has been blind since birth.

She's worked on the production line at the Opportunity Center for the last six years.

"In my community, in my town, there's not really a lot of other places where I would be able to work," said Morris.

The Opportunity Center provides Jonie and its other clients with just that, the opportunity to learn job skills.

"The clients have the opportunity to do work and it makes them feel good about themselves," said Harold Morris, the executive director.

"It's a great place to be. It gives us something to do during the day and it makes us feel important," said Tony Fleming, a client.

However, two years ago the center was struggling. Several large contracts were taken away and those in charge were left wondering how they would pay the bills.

After years of hard work, those with the center are breathing a little easier.

"We got one of our major contracts back which was a real blessing to us because it provided a lot of income to this department and work for our clients," said Pam Smith, the production manager.

That in addition to the fact that the center has gained several smaller contracts is bringing extra revenue in.
