"She escaped the residence with one child, but there was two other children in the house with the shooter." says Dwaine Barnett with the Kentucky State Police

It was less than an hour after Melanie Blackstone escaped her house in Green County when police arrived on the scene.

"Once officers arrived, it was determined that a female victim had been shot she was already taken to University of Louisville hospital for treatment." says Barnett

Even though neighbors would not comment on camera about the incident, they did tell me [Stuart Peck] it occurred about five this morning in this trailor right here behind me, this gray one right here, when Melanie Blackstone was shot by her boyfriend Jamie Smith. Blackstone then ran from her trailor, just a few feet to this white one here, with one of her children. The other two children remained inside the trailor with Smith. At that point Smith took the kids hostage, police came, the critical response team also came to the scene, at about 10 this morning, the critical response team gained entry to the house, and found Smith dead in the house, the two kids were taken to a local hospital where they are believed to be ok.

Blackstone's injuries are not life threatening, the incident is being investigated by the Kentucky State Police with the help of the Green County Sheriff's Department.

Police believe the incident began after an argument between Blackstone and Smith.
