Senator Mitch McConnell says what he would do for the ailing U.S. economy, and plans to help with a Trey Grayson fundraiser.
He opposes the bail-outs and $700-billion stimulus package President Obama has put in place, so Gene Birk asked him what he would do if he were President.
"What I would do first, said the senator, "is cancel years 2, 3, and 4 of the stimulus package. Just don't spend it. Put it back on the deficit. Number 2, we have serious long-term, unfunded liability problems with Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, without raiding them to start a new program for a whole different set of people. We need to start workin' on the long-term debt, cuz what we're doin' to our children and grandchildren is simply unacceptable."
And although he has not formally endorsed any candidate for Senator Jim Bunning's seat, Senator McConnell is one of several republican members of Congress holding a fundraiser for Trey Grayson in Washington, DC this month.
"I know Trey Grayson," said the senator. "I've worked with him for 5 years. I don't know Dr. Paul, who's one of his opponents. I hear he's a fine man, and I don't think the Republican voters of my state need any advice about who to vote for, but I'm certainly gonna be helpful to the people I know and admire, and I'm gonna support the nominee of the party, whoever that may be."
