When it comes to prescription medications, the FDA wants Americans to know not all drugs are cheaper in Canada. It says buying generic medications in the United States is often cheaper than going across the border.

Price control measures allow brand name drugs to be purchased for less in Canada, but the competitive U.S. market for generics makes them cheaper here.

"I think they wanted the consumers to know that," says Steve Sheldon, pharmacist and owner of Nation's Medicines pharmacy in Bowling Green.

"Just because some brand name drugs they were finding were cheaper didn't mean that everything was cheaper."

Generic prescriptions account for about half of all U.S. prescriptions and are usually not available for drugs that are brand new and still under patent. The FDA maintains that importing drugs from Canada or any other country is unsafe.
