With the weekend rains expected to linger into the week, officials warn motorists about potential hazards on area roads.

The heavy rains can cause flash flooding in low-lying parts of town.

Bowling Green is no stranger to high water.

Back in may, WBKO captured rescue workers helping a family escape their vehicle, trapped in nearly five feet of water.

The Warren County Sheriff's Office reminds you to pay attention if you're caught driving in heavy rains.

"The main thing with the heavy rains is to slow down and use caution," says Dep. Chris Shelton.

"If there's a road that's impassible, find an alternate route."

Flash flooding occurs when rain falls too fast to be absorbed by the ground.

The runoff flows quickly downhill, so the Sheriff's office cautions motorists about driving in low-lying areas during strong thunderstorms.

It's a good idea to avoid those areas instead of trying to drive through them.
