Librarian Shortage

Next time you're at the library you may notice a "help wanted" sign hanging. School and public libraries across the state are facing a librarian shortage. They say new technological demands of the job and the lackluster stereotype have caused the shortage.

In response, librarians have been filling in at other schools since state law requires a librarian at each school.

Western's library education coordinator, Robert Smith, says librarians are now required to have a strong technological background. As a result many students are taking their experience to work for corporations instead of schools making more money.

Meanwhile, librarians say they expect the shortage to worsen in the future as more and more current librarians retire.
