This week’s Hometown Hero is a hero to little creatures whose only way to thank her is with a look or even a bark. Lucky for her, someone besides her furry friends think she’s a hero too.

Six years ago Deana Wehr started her journey with the Humane Society as a volunteer who simply loved animals and wanted to care for the helpless pets. She worked her way up the ranks and has now been serving as the assistant director for nearly two and a half years.

“One of the biggest things that got me so strong into the Humane Society was the fact that there is so many more brought into the shelter then there are that go out and I actually walked into the euthanizing room and saw about thirty animals being euthanized and thought there had to be a some place for them to go,” Wehr said.

This is when Deana decided she was on a mission to find places for these animals to go.

After searching the World Wide Web, she was able to locate rescue groups where the pets are relocated all across the United States.

“She’s the one who makes all the phone calls. She’s the one who does all the e-mails. She does all the photos for the pet finders and does videos for dogs that really need to be adopted,” volunteer, Gloria Peach said.

Many of these animals wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Deana and she said she can’t remember life before working to save the animals at the Humane Society.

“Sometimes it’s a thankless job. The animals don’t say thank you for saving my life because they just can’t and sometimes you don’t hear ‘thank you's for it, so her [Gloria] doing this is thanking me and thanking every person who works here and I really appreciate it,” Wehr said.
