Division Over Subdividing

Residents along Nashville Road are concerned about a project that they feel would negatively effect the look of their road leading into Bowling Green, Ky. The developer, along with his attorney, met with landowners in the area this afternoon to discuss the development and issues. It's a concern landowners said needs to be addressed.

"Once we go down this road and allow this to proceed, what's to stop the rest of these large estate type properties to be subdivided? In 10 years this will be a highly densely populated area with no urban forest," Mike Simpson said.

After a meeting Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007, both sides feel the issue isn't any closer to being resolved.

"There were no real break through that took place, but the lines of communication are open. Anytime they're open there's always hope," Bill Parson said.

"At the end of the day, I don't think we're in any different position," said David Broderick, attorney for Lexington developer, Robert Williams.

WBKO waited outside Sunday afternoon's meeting between the affected landowners and Williams, the developer. After Williams' Attorney, Broderick, requested the meeting be kept private between the interested parties. Land owners said they are confused as to how someone could be allowed to take the property at the corner of Newman Way and Nashville Road and subdivide it. Residents feel in order to preserve it, it needs to have a designation of historic value.

"This is such an illogical plan; it caught all of us off guard. I mean other properties have been subdivided in the county primarily, but this is an anomaly for the Nashville Road area. For someone to basically take a front yard and chose to subdivide it," Dianne Howerton said.

Broderick said Williams and himself have tried to accommodate the nearby residents by adding certain deed restrictions when the property is developed, regardless there are still issues both sides can't seem to come to terms on.

"I think there are only two conditions that we've been asked to change that we've not agreed to, and both of them are adequately handled by current planning and zoning regulations," Broderick said.

Local residents will meet again Feb. 26, 2007, to discuss the potential development. The Planning and Zoning Board will hear more on the development at their meeting on the following Thursday night.
