The flu season may only have just begun but already one Kentucky health department is out of some vaccines.

The Whitley County Health Department ran out of their yearly supply just days after it arrived.

With H1N1 such a big problem and worry for many, the importance of getting just the regular flu shot could be at an all time high.

"This makes them more aware of how important the seasonal flu shot is," says Tamara Johnson, Whitley County Health Department.

So much that just weeks after receiving their seasonal dose of the shots, adults quickly took every single one at the Whitley County Health Department in Corbin.

"We probably gave all 1,000 doses of vaccine in 2.5 weeks," says Johnson.

The nurse here says they could have ordered more flu shots, but last year they had to throw some away.

The Whitley Health Department can still vaccinate children.

"Right now we have the mist, which is given to children ages 2 to 18," says Johnson.

No more adult vaccines will be ordered, but the H1N1 vaccine could arrive here in just a few weeks.

"What we're being told is, we're going to get shipments probably weekly or biweekly. We'll just have to order based on the number of people that we think want it," says Johnson.

Adults that do want to get the flu shots aren't left high and dry, though.

Shots are still available at many local pharmacies and at many doctor offices.

Whitley County health officials say they last time they ran out of flu shots was about 4 years ago during a shortage when the shots were only available at health departments.
