Pink ribbons are associated with breast cancer awareness but purple ribbons are symbols of domestic violence awareness.
In Downtown Bowling Green Wednesday morning Mayor Elaine Walker signed a proclamation naming October as the month of Domestic Violence Awareness.
Organizations such as the Barren River Area Safe Space were present at the signing.
Leaders say they hope to increase awareness about the services available to those who are dealing with a problem that's not only here in South Central Kentucky but is widespread.
"Well it's a big deal anywhere that you go in the US. The stats vary from 1 in 4 to up to 50% depending on the age bracket of women who will at some point in their lives be a victim of abuse," says Nora Wright, BRASS Advocacy Coordinator.
A candlelight vigil will be held in front of the Bowling Green Police Department on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 6:00p.m.
Organizers say they will honor those who have lost their lives to domestic violence.
