Bill Aimed at Promoting Treatment as an Alternative to Prison for Drug Offenders

A Bill aimed at promoting treatment as an alternative to prison for drug offenders has cleared the House Judiciary Committee.
The Bill has already passed the Senate.
The panel tacked on provisions of another bill that would allow certain felons to ask courts to have their convictions removed from their records before advancing the measure.
There is also an effort to allow certain criminal records to be expunged.
It’s been introduced several times in the past but failed to clear the General Assembly.
The main thrust of the bill is to steer some drug offenders toward treatment programs.
Senate Majority Leader Dan Kelly says the intent is to lower their chances of committing repeat offenses that could result in long prison sentences.
