For many people, the divorce process can be a long and painful one.

And now research claims that divorce can take a toll on your health decades after the life-changing event.

Radio talk show hosts Cindy Simmons and Ray Mariner know all about the stress from divorce. Both have experienced it.

"You kinda get almost overwhelmed. Well you, also, I felt, I felt a sensation of failure."

Sociologist Linda Waite says a new study finds that long after divorce, we can see the scars to people's health - 20, 30, 40 years later.

"People who were divorced or separated were about 20% more likely to have a major chronic disease like heart disease, or cancer, than people who were still married to their 1st spouse."

Waite says the culprit is stress and not taking care of your health.

"I just didn't pay attention to the fact that I wasn't really eating a whole lot."

But all is not lost if you do get divorced.

"What kind of things did you feel when you were getting your divorce? Try and eat well, see your friends, exercise, try to get a food night's sleep, make sure you see your doctor for your regular check ups."

And find love again - both Cindy and Ray have found new partners.

As the study shows, finding love again can put a little healthy spring in your step
