A registered sex offender is in jail after following a school bus in Barren County. Barren County Sheriff’s Department arrested 51-year-old Norman Taylor of Glasgow, Ky., on Wednesday, March 14, 2007.

The Sheriff’s department said Taylor was taunting and making gestures at students riding a school bus. Taylor had been following the bus for several miles and the bus driver said this has happened several times before.

“The vehicle would follow her for a few miles then she would turn off and it would go straight or he would turn off. Within the next ten minutes of her route she’d see him on the side of the road and he’d pull behind her,” said Detective Rusty Anderson, with Barren County Sheriff’s Department.

Officials say the bus driver never reported the previous incidents because she could never get the drivers license number until yesterday.

“They’re trained to watch out for incidents just like we had,” said Bud Tarry, director of Pupil Transportation.

Norman Taylor was a prime example of what bus drivers keep an eye out for.

“To watch for suspicious looking cars, individuals hanging around the bus stop, someone like that,” Tarry said.

Bus drivers go through this kind of training once a year and they’re also given a list and pictures of sexual offenders in the area.

“When we see an address on a particular route we notify the driver that person is living on the route their traveling,” Tarry said but the best way for a driver to know that something is wrong is by talking to the kids.

“Just like they told the driver, that creepy man is behind us again,” Tarry said.

“The students in the back of the bus say they saw Taylor wink, wave and make a phone gesture saying call me,” Tarry said.

“I feel like the children also have a good relationship with the drivers and feel comfortable talking to them,” parent, Jonita Piper said and this is why parents like her say even though the incident made her uneasy she isn’t worried about the safety of her kids.

“I feel confident that the bus drivers can handle the situations that’s why they’re trained,” Jonita said.

Jonita feels if another incident like this one happens again, they’ll catch it.

“Use this as an example you have to be aware that this is a possibility,” Tarry said.

Officials say Taylor is already listed as a sex offender for sexual abuse and sodomy with a child under 12-years-old. Taylor was attending a sex offender class in Bowling Green earlier yesterday for his previous offense.
