The Barren River Asset Building Coalition has introduced a new initiative that will provide low to moderate income taxpayers with free tax preparation services.

"We have five free tax preparation sites", says Tabatha Gregory.

Gregory is a Vista Volunteer with the Barren River Area Safe Space.

BRASS is one of five area organizations teaming up to help low to moderate income families file their taxes for free.

"We are also educating people about the earned income tax credits. IRS data shows that alot of eligible families are not claiming this credit so we're educating them about that", says Gregory.

Gregory says generally a family of four that earns under 39,000 dollars a year is eligible for this credit.

"This earned income tax credit is a credit that boosts their income. It's been proven to be an effective poverty alleviation method for low-income families", says Gregory.

Since many families are missing out on this credit, area organizations are wanting to help.

BRASS, the Tomorrow Center, the International Center, Branches of Barren County, and the Family Enrichment Center have all been offering help to these families.

"So far all of the sites have been preparing taxes for low income families and we are gonna have a budgeting credit offered at hand and also a question and answer session about individual development accounts that are savings accounts for the taxpayers", says Gregory.

Even though this is their first year to help, they are hoping it will catch on among those in the community.

"We did start out small this year, but we hope that the number of people that we're going to help will grow over the years", says Gregory.

April 17th is your last day to file your taxes.

Statistics show that in other areas of the state last year this free tax service help saved families an average of one-hundred dollars each in tax-preparation fees.

If you still need help getting your taxes filed and are a low to moderate income taxpayer, here are some locations you can go to.

In Bowling Green you can stop by The Tomorrow Center until April 15th (270-796-4176), the International Center until April 7th (270-781-8336), BRASS until April 13th (781-9334), and in Glasgow...BRANCHES of Barren County until April 13th (270-659-0823).
