A new study released by a gun-control advocacy group lists Kentucky at #6 on the list of exporters of guns used to commit crimes in other states. The findings have led some gun-control advocates to point to so-called "loopholes" in the state's gun laws that allow unlicensed dealers to sell firearms at gun shows without performing background checks.

Licensed dealers and gun enthusiasts say Kentucky's laws mirror federal statutes, and that the only time a background check is not performed is if a private citizen sells a gun to another private citizen.

A spokeswoman for Americans for Gun Safety, the group who released the study, says Kentucky's laws provide an opening for an illicit gun market.

Gun enthusiasts say no new statutes are needed, but tougher enforcement of the current laws would be more than welcome.
