If you've ever wondered how to properly dispose of your expired medications, a few groups got together Monday to make it a little easier.
We bring you more on how people in Franklin got the chance to clean out their medicine cabinets.
If you've ever thought of just throwing your old medicine away or maybe even flushing it, you'll want to listen up for the proper method of disposal.
"We're providing a place where people can bring their expired prescription medication, and we can dispose of it for them," said Kathy Thweatt of the Barren River District Health Department.
For the Barren River District Health Department, teaming up with volunteers and the Drug Task Force in Simpson County is a way to help get medicine off the streets.
"Prescription medication abuse and addiction is a huge problem in Kentucky and in the nation," said Thweatt. "We conducted community surveys in each of our counties, and in Simpson County this was one of the biggest issues."
"We get a lot of prescription medicine off the street and out of people's homes, and hopefully we can keep people from actually getting ahold of these that don't need them," said Chip Kraus of the Barren River District Health Department.
So what is the proper method of medication disposal?
"We put it in a bucket with a liquid, like water, and then we add an undesirable with it such as kitty litter," said Thweatt.
Once that's done, solid waste disposal does the rest.
They say they love to help out, but it's also a method you can do yourself.
"So that it doesn't seep into the ground water, you should never flush your medication, and you don't need to put it down the sink, or just throw your bottle away," said Thweatt.
To help do it properly, they sat on the square in Franklin for many hours popping pill after pill out of the medicine containers.
"We have been popping pills out of these little things now for about four hours, so we've had a really good response," said Thweatt.
"I've got some blisters," said Kraus. "Yeah, I've got a few. It's not so bad. We've got rubber gloves to hopefully keep the medicine from seeping into our skin or anything, but we've poked some holes through them. I'm sure we'll have some more holes poked through them by the end of the day, but it's all worth it in the end."
If you'd like to clean out your medicine cabinet and make sure it's done properly, these same groups will be in Logan County near Mcdonald's this Friday from 10 AM until 6 PM.
