Kentucky Could Soon Pick the President by Popular Vote

Kentucky would join other states in an effort to by-pass the electoral college under a plan pending in the Kentucky house .

Under the measure, Kentucky would instead pick the president by popular vote. According to poponents, the plan would force candidates to pay more attention to smaller states such as Kentucky.

Supporters also said they hope to have the rule in place by the 2008 presidential election. If the plan was accepted, Kentucky's eight electoral votes would go toward the presidential candidate who won the most votes nationwide. The proposal is pending in the Kentucky house.

It's unlikely the bill will win passage this year seeing as there are only two days remaining before the legislature adjourns.
