Some families in Rockfield are trying to get back on their feet after fire destroyed their apartments.

It happened early Sunday morning but those who lived there are now stranded.

What was once a country store years ago became the home of several folks just a few months ago after it was converted into an apartment building.

Those tenants are looking for a new place to call home, now that their old one is a complete loss.

"We all ran out and came downstairs and saw flames coming out of the apartments," said Selena Ramey, who lived at the apartment.

"We heard other fire alarms going off and smoke just pouring out of the bathroom," said Nancy Brown, who lived at the apartment. "The only thing we got out with was the clothes on our backs."

It's been a tough few days for Nancy Brown after an early morning fire ripped through her home.

"It's a humbling experience just to watch everything you own go up."

Brown lived at the apartments just across the tracks in Rockfield.

She's one of five families now left with little to nothing.

"It's probably the worst feeling in the world to know that my kid has nothing," Ramey added.

Brown's daughter, Selena Ramey, lived there with her husband and their little son Ernest.

He just turned two-years-old.

"We had his birthday party on the 10th and he got all new stuff," Ramey said.

"It's all gone. Everything is gone," said "Joell," another resident of the apartment who declined to give her last name.

"Joell" and her daughter Sunny lived there. The fire started in their apartment.

"It's gonna be real hard -- real hard, especially to start all over again," she said.

With help from area churches and the American Red Cross, all the families are looking for a fresh start and some way to get back on their feet,

"It's devastating watching everything burn up. But you have to take two steps back and thank God everyone got out fine," Brown said.

A trust fund has been set up for everyone living in the apartment.

If you'd like to make a donation, you can do so at the American Bank & Trust for the benefit of "the residents of 570."

It's unclear what may've started the fire.
