A jury has hit the maker of the legendary Louisville Slugger baseball bat with a heavy fine.
The jury decided Hillerich and Bradsby did not sufficiently warn consumers about the dangers of its aluminum bats and it awarded a family $850,000 after their 18-year-old son died in a game in 2003.
The family said the bats are dangerous because batters can launch the balls off faster with them.
A company spokesman maintains, the company did nothing wrong.
"That's why this is so confusing, we made a product that is approved for play and is in accordance with the rules, and now we're being punished because we didn't have a warning label on the bat," says Rick Redman, V.P. of Communications, Hillerich & Bradsby.
The jury found the product was not defective just that the company did not warn people adequately.
Redman also said the verdict appears to be an indictment of the entire sport of baseball.
