Guns were going off in Scottsville on Saturday, April 7, 2007, to benefit a corporation that helps women recovering from substance abuse.

Saturday was the Third Annual Phoenix Shoot, which is a sporting clay event that benefits the Phoenix House in Bowling Green.

It was held at Wagoner Mill Road Sporting Clays in Allen County.

Clay shooting is a pretty popular sport where players use shotguns and take their aim at clay targets being shot into the air.

"It's golf with a shotgun. It allows us to go out and shoot and almost be like hunting except we're not killing anything," participant, James Jarvis said.

Money raised from this event through entry fees went toward the Phoenix House, a non-profit corporation that helps women recovering from substance abuse.

"The money generated is going to a good cause," Jarvis said.

"The Phoenix House is a recovery home for women. Women that have been through a 28 to 30 day program in a treatment center for alcohol or drug abuse," Phoenix House chairperson, Lynn Whitmer said.

The Phoenix House is what you would call a transitional place. It gets women back on their feet and transitions the women from the treatment center to getting back into the community.

When it comes to substance abuse, health reports show that girls and women of any age can be affected.

The Phoenix House gives those suffering from alcohol and drug abuse a place to get help and helps keep families together.

"We have room for 19 women and their children so that the children don't have to be placed in foster care. They can live there. The women pay rent and that's about the only funds that we have, so fund-raising is very important," Whitmer said.

Women who stay at the Phoenix House have to follow rules and get a job. They also have to attend required meetings.
