WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama is hailing what he called the heroism that ended the gunfire at Fort Hood in Texas.

During his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama said the training designed to keep U.S. forces safe abroad prevented further deaths in the gunman's rampage. He said while the nation "saw the worst of human nature on full display, we also saw the best of America."

He pointed out that in the chaos of a shooting that left 13 dead and 30 more injured, soldiers and civilians rushed to aid fallen comrades, tore off bullet-riddled clothes to treat the injured, and took down the shooter even as they bore wounds themselves.

Obama also reminded the public of the diversity of those who serve, a move designed to calm tensions around the suspected shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan.

Obama says service members may come from all backgrounds, "But what they share is a patriotism like no other."
