The Glasgow Municipal Airport is expanding.

According to an airport official, Glasgow Municipal Airport has to grow in order to meet FAA safety regulations. The expansion will also bring millions to Glasgow helping the area's economy.

The Glasgow Municipal Airport is used for small privately owned planes. The airport may not see a lot of traffic but local businesses fly in out daily.

"Normally we have about three jet freight haulers that come in here daily and drop off or pick up items from local factories," said Keith Branham, Airport Board chairman

The airport already expanded several years ago. Branham said that the expansion put the airport in another class, so now it isn't meeting regulations and there's a major concern for safety.

"When an airplane is parked on the pavement in front of the building here that fence is along our object free zone. So, it's parked past the fence so it's parked in our object free zone. It should not be there," said Branham

Branham said besides planes parking where they're not suppose to, hangers and parking areas are interfering with departing and landing planes. If the airport doesn't begin updates soon Branham said the FAA will shut it down, "or close those parts that violate those restrictions," Branham said.

The expansion will include additional hangers, offices and parking for planes.

Branham said 42 acres of land have already been purchased to build on. He also said cost of the project will total around $6 million

"We hope the FAA will pay 95 percent of it and the city will pay 2.5 percent."

Branham also said this is a good use of city money, he hopes to see even more local businesses use the airport once there's more room.

Branham said construction should begin next spring and will take several years to complete, but it won't interfere with the airports day to day business.
