The Great American Smoke-out kicked off Thursday and one area community is hoping to snuff out cigarette smoking for good.
Several Glasgow residents took a stand Friday on a product they say is killing hundreds of Kentuckians every year.
Members of the local health department and smoke-free communities took over the Glasgow square to educate people about the effects of smoking.
Volunteers gave people information on how to quit smoking and avoid second-hand smoke.
The event was called empty shoes and the square was littered with real and fake pairs of shoes in order to make a point about the hazards facing Kentucky smokers.
"We have a display set up of shoes to indicate the number of people we believe will die of secondhand smoke within the next year in this area," says Linda Craiger, Smoke-Free Communities.
The group also provided residents with a chance to fill out questionnaires to see how they feel about smoking and its effects on the community.
The event ran from 7:00 Friday morning until 4:00.
