If you watch Sue Banister teach her physical education classes at Warren Elementary, you can see how much she cares about her K-6 children, whether they're in the sixth grade.

"They have more skill. We do a lot more. We're very active in here," says Sue. On kindergarten she says, "They're like sponges. We're doing ball handling right now, dribbling. They just learn whatever I want to teach them. They are there. They're willing. They want to learn."

Recently Banister attended the 100th state convention for the Kentucky Association of Health, Physical Education, and Dance, where she was presented with their highest award for meritorious service.

"I've been involved in kahperd for 20 years," said Banister. "I've been president. I've done a bunch of different jobs, but this is the highest award, so I am humbled and honored and very grateful."

All of her work though the Association is volunteerism to spread the word about children's health.

"Thirty-four percent of our children in Kentucky," she says,"are obese or have the tendency to be obese, so working on an image that we are teaching some skills for lifetime learning."

"She is all for what they need in their lives," says Warren Elementary Principal Phillip Shelton. "And she works with them diligently. Physical activity. She has their health in mind. She's just a great role model for our students here."

Her love for the children makes her organize her classes so all the students receive benefits for their health.

"We don't pick teams," she says. "This is a very structured environment, but it is a very non-threatening environment. I've worked very hard so that when they come in, they can be successful no matter what fitness level they are."

Banister says it's important to reach the students about exercise and health when they are young and more willing to learn.
