Some would say Drakes Creek Elementary is losing a piece of history. The school will soon say goodbye to a guidance counselor who has been there since the elementary opened its doors in 1988, but not before they are given the opportunity to recognize her as this week’s Hometown Hero.

Clarkie Burks has been with Drakes Creek Middle School from the beginning. Over the past nineteen years co-workers said she’s made footprints on the school that will never be erased.

“I dare say while the guidance counselors in this district are outstanding, I would doubt anyone could hold a candle stick to the services she has preformed for our whole school and I mean faculty, staff, students - everybody,” said Winnie Cohron, assistant principal of Drakes Creek Middle School.

As much guidance and support she’s shown the students and faculty, she has shown just as much to them.

“She is not just supportive of students’ needs; she’s supportive of facility needs, ambitions and goals,” Winnie said.

Kim Davis works very close with Clarkie and said she goes above and beyond what her job title calls for.

“She always checks on all of us to make sure our bases are covered as far as, ‘do we need anything’ or ‘if there’s anything she can do to help us,’” Kim said.

Winnie said in addition to her professionalism, she’s especially going to miss who Clarkie is on a personal level.

“Simply the friendship that she exhibits toward me everyday and the genuine personal concern she has, I’ll miss coming in contact with that,” Winnie said.

“It’s just an honor to me. I would have never ever done this. She had to beat me up to get me to be on T.V., but thank you very much,” Clarkie said.

Clarkie said she’s not completely ready to be out of the school setting and she plans to find a job after she retires from Drakes Creek Middle School.
