Local petting zoo held for children

May 6, 2007, begins National Pet Week, and to get it kicked off right, Snodgrass Veterinary Medical Center held its annual petting zoo.

The petting zoo has been held almost every year since 1990 and Veterinarian Stan Snodgrass said the event gives children an opportunity to be around some animals they may not usually see.

"I asked a little girl a while ago. She said she'd ridden twice, and it was last year here and this year again. So a lot of these kids don't get to see horses or llamas or anything like that, so it's a good time for them to get on a horse and ride around," Dr. Snodgrass said.

Besides horses and llamas, there were also peacocks, ducks, geese, turkeys, snakes and other animals on hand.

Snodgrass said the rain cooled things off and that was good for the animals.
