May 4 is the one-year anniversary of an attack on Western's campus that ended in death.
Katie Autry was attacked after attending a party at the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity house. She was raped, beaten, and set on fire in her dorm room in Hugh Poland Hall.
She died May 8. An eyewitness to the crime told police he saw Lucas Goodrum commit the heinous acts. Goodrum was arrested May 11.
On May 12, Katie Autry was laid to rest in Beaver Dam. The next day, a second arrest was made for her murder. Stephen Soules, the man police say accused Goodrum, was also facing murder charges and the death penalty.
On September 18, 2003 Katie Autry's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against WKU, Pi Kappa Alpha, and the Hugh Poland Hall director.
Two months later, on November 26, 2003, the suit against WKU was dismissed.
Goodrum has tried to bond out three times, but has been denied because he is considered a flight risk.
On March 24, 2004 Stephen Soules changed his plea to guilty receiving a life sentence in jail.
Lucas Goodrum's trial will begin July 30.
