Bush to Reduce America's Dependence on Oil

President Bush is ordering his administration to begin regulating vehicle emissions by the end of his term of office.

Speaking from the White House rose garden, the president said the rules would cut gasoline consumption and greenhouse gas emission from motor vehicles. The regulatory action would not require action by Congress.

In his speech President Bush also emphasized the need to decrease our nation's oil dependence.

"Our dependence on oil creates a threat to America's national security, because it leaves us more vulnerable to hostile regimes and to terrorists who could attack oil infrastructure," Bush said. "For all these reasons America has a clear national interest in reducing our dependence on oil."

The move comes in response to last month's Supreme Court decision. The court rebuked the administration for its inaction on global warming. The ruling means gases can be regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency.
