A community walking trail, sponsored by Kohl's and the Medical Center, is now complete at Briarwood Elementary School.
The walking trail, including various fitness stations, was built through a $13,319 grant to Commonwealth Health Foundation from the Kohl's Cares for Kids program to support community wellness. The grant also provided first through third grade students at the school with free memberships to The Medical Center Health Kid's Club. The memberships include quarterly programs and activities that encourage healthy lifestyles, such as the 60 Minute-a-Day Exercise Challenge, Healthy Eating classes, Acts of Kindness classes and Body Mass Index screenings. In order to help promote physical fitness, 100 pedometers were used with the intervention programs.
"One of the main goals of The Medical Center Healthy Kid's Club is to encourage children and families to become more physically active," said Doris C. Thomas, Vice President of Marketing/Development and spokesperson for Commonwealth Health Corporation, the parent company of The Medical Center.
"Joining forces with Kohl's to build the walking trail at Briarwood Elementary provides an excellent opportunity to engage the students, faculty and those in the neighborhood of the school to stay active through walking on a daily basis," Thomas explained.
