It's almost graduation time at schools across South Central Kentucky. At Lighthouse Academy students had the chance to enjoy a steak dinner with all of the fixings to celebrate.
Lighthouse is an alternative school where students work at their own pace, using a computer system to complete their school work.
For J.T. Meador, high school hasn't been easy.
When he entered Lighthouse Academy J.T.'s hopes of graduating became more of a reality.
"J.T. has done great work in there because he can work at his own pace," said Mark Williams, the principal of Lighthouse Academy.
Now the wait is almost over.
"It's great. I'm ready to get out of here and go on to college," J.T. said.
For J.T. and his family, his walk in a cap and gown will be a major accomplishment.
"In school he wasn't paying attention to the teachers. He wouldn't do his work because he had to do it handwritten," said Donna Meador, J.T.'s mother.
Donna said the alternative setting of Lighthouse has helped J.T. thrive.
"Using the computers here at Lighthouse, he's made As and Bs on all of his grades," Donna said.
Besides his grades, J.T. is also celebrating having perfect attendance throughout his entire school career. That's 13 years of not missing a day!
"... Hard - it took a lot of dedication to get up every morning and make it there, but I did," J.T. said.
"He's even gotten up on mornings, sick and throwing up, but he'd tell me, ' mom I'm not going to miss school, I want to go,'" Donna explained.
J.T. plans on taking the skills he's learned at Lighthouse and using them in college. He also wants to keep up his perfect attendance through the rest of his educational career.
Around 50 students from Lighthouse are graduating on May 18, 2007.
Proceeds from the sale of a new house, in the Brentwood Place Subdivision, will fund a scholarship at Lighthouse and the special education program at Moss Middle.
The Warren County School District said the two builders' families have been helped by these programs.
