Work has begun on a nearly $900,000 project to keep acid mine drainage out of a Muhlenberg County stream.
The Division of Abandoned Mine Lands says Road Builders and Parkway Construction is expected to complete the work by October 2010.
Water flowing from a mined area in the upper Caney Creek Watershed is highly acidic and contains metallic contaminants such as iron and aluminum.
To stop the drainage the company is working to fill abandoned surface mining pits, grading and re-vegetating the 20 acres near Greenville.
