The race for the Democratic U.S. Senate seat nomination pits Glasgow native David L. Williams against eastern Kentucky physician and State Senator Dr. Daniel Mongiardo.

Williams has run several previous unsuccessful campaigns for statewide office, but says he enjoys being the underdog. Williams says he will fight for Kentucky's tobacco farmers and would support pulling U.S. troops out of Iraq.

This is the first statewide race for Dr. Mongiardo, who says his eastern Kentucky background puts him in touch with the "working class." Mongiardo says improving rural healthcare and enabling the importation of generic drugs from Canada are two of his primary concerns.

The Democratic nominee will face Republican incumbent Sen. Jim Bunning or his primary opponent, Barry Metcalfe in November.
